Our Vegas Vacation

My father-in-law likes to drive all over and show us views - actually my mother-in-law does the driving but it's him that can't sit still. So we went to Las Vegas, about 3.5 hours away. You've probably been there, but I'll give you my first (& last?) impressions...

We stayed on Las Vegas Blvd, in the Excalibur, which was like a Disney castle. They had a tournament dinner show - I've always wanted to see one of these but it was completely sold out while we were there. Got rooms in separate towers & failed to connect at dinnertime - aww, too bad. (Yes!!) We had a huge prime rib - does anyone really eat as much as they serve in these places? Had to work it off so we decided to see the strip.

From our hotel, we rode a moving walkway to the Luxor, which has an impressive lobby because of its being built inside a pyramid (some of the rooms look down into it - that must be cool), then took a walkway over the street to the Tropicana (orange tigers, but otherwise not exceptional).

After that, we walked over the street to MGM Grand, where the lobby is a step below the Luxor with a 1930's Hollywood Art Deco theme. (Somehow, we missed the huge amusement park...)

Back to the Tropicana to walk over the street to New York New York, the best of the Disney/Universal Studios types. The lobby here is a labrynth of short city streets between deceptively miniaturized buildings and real restaurants, all modeled on old New York City. In the more open central area are vine-laden pergolas over gaming tables and the requisite slot machines.

Outside, the complex is a partial replica of the NYC skyline, complete with the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State building. A rollercoaster accessed from inside goes around the whole top, dipping into the building and out again at one point so you can hear the riders scream...
